STEEL MILL POETRY AND LITERATURE

Some of the most powerful images of the steel industry are evoked through the poetry of those who have worked or lived in a steel town. The first was written by my brother, a tribute to our Dad, Mahlon 'Bud' Allgren, a lifelong employee of United Engineering and Foundry Co., later Wean-United after it's merger with Wean Industries of Warren, OH. Based in Pittsburgh, United was a leading manufacturer of industrial rolls and machinery which were used in every stage of the finishing processes in steel mills, from rolling ingots to finisehd sheets and plates. The poems following were originally published in "Mahoning Valley Poetry," an anthology of Youngstown writers published in 1993 by Bacchae Press.
'My Father's Job' by Joseph Allgren
'Days Since Last Accident' by Joe Gorman
'Open Hearth' by M. Lisa Shattuck
'The Last Day' by Vito R. Carchedi
